Speakers and Topic covered:

Aral Balkan: Introduction & Conclusion

Guy Watson

Introduction to the Image API

The Image API is a collective term used to describe the new BitmapData Actionscript Class and the various other associated methods that come together to form an impressive new feature set in the new Flash 8 Player that provides Flash Developers with the capability to create and manipulate 32 bit images at run-time using actionscript. In this session Guy will show you all you need to know to get up and running with the Image API in your projects and discuss some of its capabilities by de-constructing various examples that will make your mouth water with amazement. "Is that really Flash?" Damn right it is!

Flash 8 - Webcam Motion Tracking

In this session I will discuss how to use the new Image API in Flash Player 8 to detect movement in a webcam. You may be aware of the EyeToy available for Sony Playstation. Flash 8 can do those things too! Using this input you can then create games and interactive art pieces all controlled by the user moving around in front of the camera, for things such as installations, kiosks or just for fun. The possibilities are endless, I will share a few of my own experiments, but the rest is up to you.

Rob Bateman: Flash 8 Video - Bigger, Faster & Uncut

Rob will take you through the new features of the Flash 8 Player and Authoring Tool regarding Flash Video. This will include:

  • Step by step guide to using the new Macromedia Encoder
  • Examples of on-the-fly video effects using alpha channels and the BitmapData API
  • A deconstruction of new Actionscript features, such as cuePoint events.
  • Simple techniques for embedding Flash Video in a webpage.
  • Information on Streaming Video with Macromedia's new Media Server 2.0

Richard Leggett: Flash 8 Mobile

The session will cover every aspect of what it takes to make compelling mobile content with Flash. From creating assets to building a sample application and game, and testing the content on a variety of handsets using the new mobile emulator. I'll then cover the various deployment and distribution mechanisms in place showing how to package up your applications ready for sale through a content provider. The session will also cover making a multi-player application and game that the audience can participate in - showing live voting and multi-user interaction.

Tink, a.k.a Stephen Downs: FileReference Round Trip
(Audience Level: intermediate. Pre-requisite Knowledge: ActionScript 2.0)

FileReference is a new Flash 8 ActionScript class that enables users to upload and download files to and from the users computer and a server.

In this session we will take a comprehensive look at the FileReference API, using both upload and download examples that include all the methods and properties of the FileReference object.

We will then cover a round trip using the FileReference object and the new BitmapData object consisting of the following:

  • Upload a bitmap file to the server
  • Download the bitmap into the Flash Player
  • Edit the bitmap in the Flash Player
  • Dynamically create a new bitmap on the server of the editing bitmap in the Flash player
  • Download the new bitmap to the users Hard Drive
