Aha! Now THIS is exactly where I was going. 

Our main data model will consist of an XML object. In our views, each
tab/screen may only show data from a node of that object. Each of these
screens may implement a custom V2 component comprised of MX components
that will display attributes or sub-nodes from that node.

One of these components will be displaying the results of an
availability check, which may take a while to run, so we want this
component to update as data comes in.

And you could even bind TextInput's/ TextArea' s to a XML node.. 

Why I am saying this .. I'm working on an app where there needs to be
some dynamic forms.  a form description can be

<item type='TextInput'>some text </item>
<item type='TextInput'>some more text </item>
<item type='TextArea'><span>some html</span></item>
<item type='Tree'><item label='test'><item label='test'/ ></item></item>

it would be so cool to bind every node to it's own component ..  and off
course when the component is edited / changed the model is also
automatically updated .. -> oejeeh ;> binding rules ... 

I am wondering if Christophe is also using the ML this way ??

Or it could be XML (Tree, Menu), or a RecordSet (List, ComboBox,  
DataGrid). If you're using V2 components, how else would you store  
your data? If it were just a string or a single object, you're likely  
not using it for one of those V2 components, no?
