[Arp] Understanding Arp's Patterns

Thankx Manual...still waiting for Heads First but have gotten my hands on
the patterns article at
http://www.richinternetapps.com/archives/AS2_DesignPatterns_for_RIA.pdf.

This seems to be exactly what I was whining about not having...previous
exposure to AS patterns and frameworks hadn't exposed me to things as basic
as the VO, SL or BusDel.

If Heads First helps as much as this perhaps I'll be able to crack this nut
after all.

When your copy of head first gets there take a look at the sections covering
the commands- it helps a lot!  Actually it's an illuminating read from start
to finish (X number of times through).  It wasn't until I was knee deep in
my own first project and stuck as a pig that certain parts started to make
sense to me.

I

I would say start at your view and see how each view is added etc.  One
place that it moves away from Moock's approach that kinda threw me at first
is the fact that you have one controller for all of the views in ARP.
look at the controller and then go up the inheritance tree to the
controllerTemplate  so that you can see that it really is an extended MVC.
Seeing how it was working made it less "Mystical" and more concrete to me.

I still consider myself fumbling through certain parts of it so I'll be more
than happy to take a shot at whatever questions you come up with along the
way as well.

I'd just ordered the Head First earlier today. I've read the developer's
manual – it documents usage rather than describing the problems being
addressed. This isn't criticism...I can see the manual is written with above

average skill
but the audience is presumed to be a higher order of OO skill
than (imho) the average Flash coder.

I'm working to bring up the Pizza sample so perhaps I'll have more relevent
questions as I dig into that but given how many developers have digested
Moock's MVC I really think it would be helpful to use that as a jumping off
point or as a foil/counter point to how Arp is approaching things. Seems
like it would be possible to have a narrative like 'A ModelLocater is
like/different from the Model that Moock talked about in these ways.'

I'll happily offer my learning curve to the effort – and I've had a fair
amount of success in the past by tinking with pre-existing models. I intend
to move a multiple choice quiz based on Moock's to AS2 (hopefully via Arp)
so I have a directly relevent project but it's looking like I have a bit
more homework to do in preparation.

There are some yes, and there are some descriptions to the patterns used in
ARP in the ARP developers manual. The next point of reference myself and
many others would recommend is the O'Reilly Head First Design Patterns book.

I'm hoping someone can outline Arp's patterns in a way that someone who's
only in-depth exposure to patterns came via Moock's OOAS – essentially a
extended tutorial on MVC. Reviewing the archives it looks like most everyone
comes into the discussion with a good background on the wider
state-of-the-art of pattern-based OO programming but if one is transitioning
from timeline-based Flash development hoping to grasp Arp it's a pretty
hefty curve – even with Moock's MVC under one's belt.

Would it be possible to draw parallels from MVC to Arp's implementation?

thankx
